Following their decisive 295-run victory against Australia in the opening Test at Perth, India has surged to the top of the World Test Championships (WTC) Points Table.
With their decisive 295-run victory over Australia at the Optus Stadium in Perth on Monday, Team India has surged back into contention to guarantee a spot in a third consecutive World Test Championships (WTC) final. Under the leadership of Jasprit Bumrah, who was filling in for regular captain Rohit Sharma in this match, India has made a significant first step towards winning the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT), which requires them to win four of the five Test matches in this series.
In terms of runs, the 295-run victory against Australia was Team India’s biggest away victory, surpassing their 222-run victory in Melbourne in 1977. With a points percentage of 61.11, the victory sent India to the top of the WTC 2025 points table, while Australia fell to second place with 57.69.
The visitors were in second place with a point percentage of 58.33% prior to India solidifying its dominance by opening the BGT with a decisive 295-run triumph. In 14 games, India has eight victories and five losses. To guarantee a spot in the WTC 2025 final, India still has to win three of the final four Test matches.

Following India’s historic home Test series thumping of New Zealand, Australia took the lead. With a point percentage of 62.50 percent, Australia was at the top of the tables.
Following their historic victory in Adelaide in 2018, this was India’s second Test series opening victory in Australia. When Bumrah bravely decided to bat first after winning the toss, it was obvious what the intention was. When India collapsed on 150 in the first innings, heads fell and confidence waned.
Everything suggested that Australia would put the visitors on the defensive, particularly following India’s humiliating 3-0 home series loss to New Zealand. Bumrah’s wild spell in the first innings turned him into the ray of hope. With Harshit Rana and Mohammed Siraj offering the perfect assistance, he shook Australia’s top order.
India needed just seven more wickets to win the match on Day 4 after causing Australia to struggle at 12/3 after dealing them severe damage late on Day 3. On the fourth day of the first Test match against Australia in Perth, fast bowler Mohammed Siraj took two wickets in the morning session, putting India within striking distance of victory at lunchtime.
After one session on Monday, Australia was at 104/5 and still needed 430 runs to win, but Siraj’s outstanding fast bowling grabbed the crucial wickets of Steve Smith and Usman Khawaja.
Bumrah took his third wicket of the innings, ending a strong 81-run sixth-wicket partnership, and Australia lost the dangerous Travis Head shortly after lunch on a well-made 89. Australia was left reeling at 182/7 when Nitish Reddy bowled Mitchell Marsh (47), four overs later.
In the absence of full-time captain Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah took over as captain and turned the tide in India’s favor with an outstanding five-wicket haul that held Australia to only 104.
