As a replacement for Mitchell Marsh, Beau Webster was selected to Australia’s team for the Adelaide Test match against India.
Beau Webster, an uncapped all-rounder, made a huge step toward his ambition of playing Test cricket for Australia on Thursday when he was selected to replace Mitchell Marsh in Australia’s team for the second Test match against India in Adelaide next week. After Marsh pulled up sore after being thrashed by the visitors by 295 runs in Monday’s first Test in Perth, the 30-year-old is on standby.
“Webster will join the squad next week, having been named the Sheffield Shield player of the year last summer and continuing that form this season,” announced Cricket Australia.
After Australia’s 295-run defeat to India, skipper Pat Cummins stated, “(Marsh) He has been battling a couple of little niggles since the UK tour.”
“He has a chance to rest and try to get it right over the next ten days because he was a little sore towards the end of this Test match (Perth).” We’ll observe his progress. Webster may be given a debut if Marsh is unable to recuperate in time for the second Test.
Who is Beau Webster?
With 1788 runs, including five hundreds and nine fifties, Webster, a Tasmanian, has been one of the Sheffield Shield’s top players for the last two years. Like Marsh, he is a right-arm pacer.
He took five wickets and hit 61 and 49 in Tasmania’s Sheffield Shield match against New South Wales earlier this week.
This summer, Webster has taken 16 wickets and amassed 448 runs at an average of 56 in first-class cricket. In Australia A’s 2-0 series victory against India A, he bowled figures of 3-19 and 3-49 and scored unbeaten scores of 61 and 46.
Following West Indian legend Sir Garry Sobers, Webster became only the second player in the 132-year history of the game to score over 900 runs and capture 30 wickets in a season last summer.
Following the domestic match, Tasmanian captain Jordan Silk told reporters, “(Webster’s) a special player at the moment.”
“I feel like I can throw him the ball whenever I think we’re having problems, and he just seems to be able to come up with something. Whenever we’re having similar problems with the bat, he’s able to get us out of it.”
“He demonstrated his class once more in this match by scoring important runs in the first and second innings, and then taking the final two wickets, of course.”Australia has kept the same roster for the Adelaide match and is unlikely to make significant changes to their playing eleven despite the crushing loss.
