The purpose of the gathering was to debate the candidate for Maharashtra’s next chief minister, with Devendra Fadnavis predicted to be the front-runner.
The Mahayuti alliance has yet to name Maharashtra’s next chief minister as of November 29, 2024. Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP President JP Nadda, interim Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, and Deputy Chief Ministers Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar met late Thursday in New Delhi, but they were unable to come to an agreement.
Leaders stated that the decision will be confirmed at a later meeting in Mumbai after the deliberations in Delhi. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Shiv Sena, and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) formed the Mahayuti coalition, which won a landslide win in the last state elections, raising expectations for the Chief Ministerial appointment.
According to reports, Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar are expected to remain as Deputy Chief Ministers, while BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis is a serious candidate for the Chief Ministership.
The final decision is anticipated to be revealed following the Mumbai summit, although formal confirmation is still awaited.
As the state waits for clarification on its new leadership, the announcement’s postponement has sparked further conjecture and conversations among the public and political circles.
Mahayuti Meeting
Shinde met with Amit Shah in Delhi before to the Mahayuti conference to negotiate the state’s power-sharing agreement. Arriving from Mumbai, Shinde went directly to Shah’s home on Krishna Menon Marg, where BJP president J P Nadda was already there.
Shinde’s close aide stated on Thursday that he is not likely to take the deputy chief minister position under the incoming administration. However, Shiv Sena spokesperson and MLA Sanjay Shirsat stated that Shinde will be included in the government. It seems improbable that he will serve as deputy chief minister. “It is inappropriate for someone who has previously held the position of chief minister,” Shirsat told PTI.
Shrikant Shinde, Shinde’s MP son, said he was proud of his father for demonstrating “alliance dharma” by putting the good of the group ahead of individual goals. He praised his father for putting Maharashtra’s needs ahead of his own political ambitions and for continuing to have trust in PM Modi and Amit Shah.
Mahayuti, backed by the BJP, won Maharashtra handily.
In the most recent state assembly elections, the BJP-led Mahayuti coalition won 230 seats in the 288-member House, capping an incredible success. The BJP recovered from its defeats in the state’s Lok Sabha elections by winning 132 seats, the most of any Mahayuti constituency. Both Ajit Pawar’s NCP and Shinde’s Shiv Sena had strong showings. NCP got 41 seats, while Sena won 57.
The Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), led by the Congress, was set back. After winning just 16 seats, the grand old party had one of its worst showings in the state assembly elections. Only 10 seats were gained by Sharad Pawar’s NCP(SP), whereas 20 seats were won by Uddhav Thackeray’s (UBT).
