India vs Australia 2nd Test: Nathan Lyon is “more than surprised” that Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin would not be playing in the Test matches in Adelaide and Perth.
Nathan Lyon, an Australian spinner, acknowledges that he was “more than surprised” to see Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja benched during the Perth Test. He is even more confused by the likelihood that the two Indian spinners may experience the same fate in the Adelaide Test, which begins on Friday. Even though Lyon, who is perhaps the finest Test spinner in the world, and Ashwin both praised the caliber of players in India’s ranks, it says volumes about the depth of the team when a player of Ashwin’s or Jadeja’s caliber gets benched for someone else.
With 536 wickets, Ashwin leads all current cricket players in the world in wicket-taking, followed by Lyon (532). Although Lyon is still frequently included in Australia’s starting lineup, both domestically and abroad, Ashwin struggles when playing in SENA countries. He and Jadeja, who has taken 303 wickets himself, were benched for Washington Sundar in the Perth Test, and based on India’s practice sessions, their lineup will not alter for the day-night Test either.

Although Lyon finds it humorous that neither spinner is allowed to play in the pink-ball Test or the subsequent games in Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane, he can appreciate India’s reasoning for the decision.
“More than surprised,” Lyon told reporters on Wednesday about Ashwin and Jadeja’s exclusion from India’s starting lineup. “However, their team of Indian cricket players is of such caliber. Ravi [Jadeja] has more over 300 wickets, whereas Ashwin has more than 530. I can’t control who they run out, but it’s still really amazing to witness the caliber of players sitting on the bench.”
Virat Kohli, who single-handedly controlled Australian headlines, was the focus of the stories leading up to the Test series. However, Jasprit Bumrah seemed to have garnered some attention for himself with his incredible stints in Perth. However, Lyon insists that the other players are a genuine threat to Australia in the last four Test matches, not just Kohli and Bumrah.

Nathan Lyon is always available to everyone.
“India boasts a number of superstars. Though there are other players, Virat and Bumrah are undoubtedly the best. India has a formidable squad that is difficult to defeat. We’re not concentrating on a single player. That does not exclude us from competing with them. “We will make sure to play our brand of cricket and compete against this Indian team, but we respect them,” Lyon continued.
Lyon vs. Rishabh Pant is one of the most anticipated individual bouts and is sure to be lip-smacking. In Perth, it didn’t take center stage since Lyon couldn’t even rotate his arms over for extended periods of time before Pant was dismissed. But when Nitish Reddy pursued him, Lyon did resemble the 2021 series. Lyon is prepared to take the chance of luring the India all-rounder if he believes a wicket is imminent, even if only one player emerged victorious from that contest, with Reddy taking home the trophy.
