In a landmark announcement for football enthusiasts, Kerala Sports Minister V. Abdurahiman revealed on Wednesday that Argentina’s national football team, including global icon Lionel Messi, will visit the state next year for an international match.

Addressing the media, the minister stated that the event would be organized under the direct supervision of the Kerala government. He assured that the financial support required for hosting the high-profile match would come from the business community of the state.

“Kerala has the infrastructure, the passion, and the expertise to host this historic occasion. All financial assistance for the event will be provided by the merchants of the state,” the minister said, expressing confidence in Kerala’s ability to execute the event seamlessly.

Argentina’s Recent World Cup Qualifying Performance

The announcement comes on the heels of Argentina’s continued dominance in the South American World Cup qualifiers. The reigning world champions secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Peru, courtesy of a stunning volley from Lautaro Martinez.

The match, held at Buenos Aires’ iconic ‘Bombonera’ stadium, showcased a moment of brilliance from Inter Milan striker Martinez, who connected with a perfectly floated cross from Lionel Messi. Martinez’s left-footed volley thundered past Peru’s goalkeeper Pedro Gallese, sealing Argentina’s eighth win from 12 games.

With 25 points, Argentina remains at the top of the CONMEBOL standings, inching closer to qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Brazil Held to a Draw Against Uruguay

Meanwhile, Brazil struggled in their qualifier, drawing 1-1 with Uruguay in Salvador. Uruguay’s Federico Valverde broke the deadlock with a stunning finish in the 55th minute. However, Brazil responded seven minutes later when Gerson equalized with a powerful volley from a deflected clearance.

Gabriel Martinelli came close to securing a winner for Brazil, but his attempt was brilliantly saved by Uruguay’s goalkeeper Sergio Rochet.

The draw leaves Brazil in fifth place in the CONMEBOL standings with 18 points, one point behind fourth-placed Colombia, who faced a surprising 1-0 loss to Ecuador.

A Historic Opportunity for Kerala

The upcoming visit of Argentina’s national team marks a historic opportunity for Kerala to host world-class football. Known for its fervent football culture, the state is set to witness unparalleled excitement as Lionel Messi and his team prepare to grace its soil.

Football enthusiasts across India are eagerly anticipating the event, which promises to be a celebration of the sport and a momentous occasion for the nation.
