The ending of the blockbuster Deadpool & Wolverine underwent a dramatic transformation thanks to a key suggestion from Blake Lively, actress and wife of Ryan Reynolds. During the film’s director’s commentary (via Games Radar), Reynolds and director Shawn Levy revealed that the film’s climactic scene was reshot after Lively’s input, turning a straightforward finale into a moment of suspense and emotional payoff.
Lively, who lent her voice to the character of Lady Deadpool in the movie, suggested a shift in tone for the ending. Initially, the film concluded with Deadpool and Wolverine saving the world by destroying the Time Ripper with no real uncertainty about their survival. However, Lively proposed introducing a moment of suspense where the heroes’ fates seemed uncertain, heightening the emotional impact of their eventual return.
The Reshoots That Made the Difference
The creative team acted quickly, completing reshoots in just a day and a half. “These kinds of movies typically involve weeks of reshoots,” Reynolds explained, expressing pride in the quick turnaround.
The revised scene depicts Deadpool and Wolverine appearing to sacrifice themselves to destroy the Time Ripper. As their fates remain unknown, Paradox, played by Matthew Macfadyen, delivers a moving speech, only to have it interrupted by the heroes’ triumphant and unexpected return. The entire sequence is set to the Goo Goo Dolls’ iconic track Iris.

Levy credited Lively’s feedback for rethinking the climax. “It used to be that there was no suspense — the power room blew up, and our heroes survived,” Levy said. “Blake told us, ‘Let me sit in the fear that they’re lost. Make me feel that suspense so their survival is more visceral and emotional.’”
The result, Levy added, made the ending far more satisfying.
Box Office and Streaming Success
Deadpool & Wolverine has been a monumental success, grossing $1.3 billion worldwide, making it the second-highest-grossing movie of 2024 and the biggest R-rated release in history. The film’s success extended to streaming platforms, with 19.4 million views on Disney+ in its first six days, breaking records as the most-watched live-action film on Disney+ or Hulu since Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
Fans can now experience both the theatrical cut and a director’s commentary version of Deadpool & Wolverine on Disney+, where the film continues to captivate audiences.
A Collaborative Triumph
The creative evolution of Deadpool & Wolverine showcases the power of collaboration in filmmaking. Thanks to Blake Lively’s keen insight, the movie’s ending resonated deeply with viewers, elevating it from entertaining to unforgettable.
